(PM) – A volcano on White Island in New Zealand, a popular tourist destination, erupted on Monday.
Police estimate that ‘fewer than 50 people’ were on or near the island at the time of the eruption.
St. John Ambulance reports that up to 20 people have suffered injuries in the eruption. At least one person was critically injured in the incident and a number of people are unaccounted for.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern deployed search and rescue crews at the eruption site. The volcano erupted just minutes after a photo was taken with people walking into the crater.
