(PM) – A Detroit police officer was killed on Wednesday night when a man opened fire with a high-powered rifle during a home invasion, according to NBC. The officer was an 18-year veteran on the police force, but his name has not been released
Another officer at the scene suffered a gunshot wound to the foot.
Police responded to a home invasion at 7:20 PM after occupants called about an armed man inside their home. When police arrived, the suspect opened fire on them.
The suspect was wounded after police returned fire and taken into police custody. The gunman is in serious condition, according to the police chief.
Police do not believe there is any threat to the public. The situation stemmed from a domestic situation and the gunman was looking for his girlfriend.
Police say that the suspect has a lengthy criminal history, which includes weapons charges.
