BOSTON, MA (PM) — Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy, a progeny of the Kennedy political dynasty, will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2020 on Saturday, making official a primary challenge to current Sen. Edward J. Markey.
Individuals close to Kennedy’s plans authenticated the coming announcement and stated the candidate will then spend several days on a statewide tour. The Boston Globe first reported the news.
The officials conversed on the condition of anonymity to freely describe the plans.
Kennedy engaged with Markey on Wednesday to inform him in person, a source stated.
Kennedy, the grandson of the late attorney general and New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy, has only been in Congress since 2013, but his family’s political legacy in Massachusetts dates to the late 1800s.
Markey has served in Congress since 1976, first in the U.S. House and then in the Senate, after conquering a special election in 2013. Markey has previously earned the endorsement of fellow Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a top-tier candidate for president, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), the 29-year-old freshman and a progressive star of the House of Representatives.
