«Who do you suck?», his car who got its door cut with a knife, and the degradation of 85% of the placards in favor of his candidacy. That’s the awful spectacle Simon Marchand, Bloc Québécois’s candidate in Hochelaga’s riding, discovered at the morning of September 22nd.
Having campaigned another time in 2015 for the same party in the same riding, Mr.Marchand knew that a campaign come with vandalism, but he was surprised by the intensity of the raid against his candidacy done in the night, in an Eastern Montreal neighborhood well known since long ago for its far-left activism and it’s separatist leaning.
The cost of the whole raid was enough considerable it could «affect the fair play of the campaign in this riding» claimed the candidate.
This comes as is this neighborhood, another candidate suffered a wave of vandalism a week before: Soraya Martinez Ferrada, the liberal candidate in this riding, had her placarding tagged with black eyes, swastikas, and even got one of her posters into a Telephone booth!
On the other hand, one candidate had mysteriously his posters in very good shape in the affected area: Catheryn Roy-Goyette, the candidate of the left-wing NDP who has a bid to succeed an MP of her own party who represented this riding for 2 terms.
While other candidates are publicly calling not to accuse anyone, behind the scened, few doubts the nocturn raid was a blow done by radical leftist groups in order to undermine the targeted candidates’ chances of success and the course of the campaign.
This wouldn’t be new in a neighborhood regularly hit by far-left activism, even if this remains to be proved as justice and truth will seek its way in this case.
