Update: All passengers on the Mahalaxmi Express have been rescued.
(PM)- Due to massive flooding in the Mumbai region, the Mahalaxmi Express has been stranded between the areas Baldlapur and Vangani. Reports indicate that 700 people were on board the train at the time. The 700 passengers aboard Mahalakshmi Express are expected to be airlifted. The flooding is caused by the Ulhas River overflowing due to heavy rains.
Eight rescue teams from Navy and three diving teams were mobilized for the rescue operations. Videos on twitter showed the train completely surrounded by floodwaters.
The heavy rains have also caused Modak Sagar lake to overflow on Friday afternoon. The lake is the second-largest lake to supply water to Mumbai.
A bus is also stuck due to heavy rainfalls in the Pacca Kotha village.
