A federal judge has just ordered that the State of North Carolina cannot ban transgender people from using the restroom that matches their gender identity. The ruling comes in the form of an accepted consent decree suggested by Democratic Governor Roy Cooper and LGBTQ organizations.
It targets HB142 and its forerunner, the comprehensive and ill-disposed HB2, which was created to dismantle transgender people, LGBTQ people, minorities, workers, and even people over 40 and the elderly of their constitutional civil rights.
The Charlotte Observer reports the ruling affects only facilities operated by the State of North Carolina and does not solve other discriminatory concerns.
North Carolina, however, has no legislation protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.
