WASHINGTON (PM) — Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats will resign in the coming days, President Trump announced on Twitter Sunday. An acting DNI director will be announced soon.
Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Tex.) is understood as a leading contender to succeed Coats. Coats will leave office on August 15.
Trump has been thinking of replacing Coats since at least February, as Axios recently reported. The director of national intelligence functions as a superintendent of the U.S. intelligence community and a close adviser to the president and National Security Council, producing each day’s top-secret Presidential Daily Brief.
