(PM) – According to a United States media report, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plans to buy new missile technology from China, escalating its ballistic missile program.
The US government had obtained intelligence on the technology transfers, but US President Donald Trump administration did not give out the intelligence report with key members of Congress.
According to the 1987 Missile Technology Control Regime, Saudi Arabia is barred from buying ballistic missiles from the US and others, but China is not part of the informal pact.
The kingdom has been buying Chinese missiles for decades, but it is not known whether Saudi Arabia has the ability to build its own missiles or deploy those it has acquired over the years.
In January, the Washington Post published satellite imagery showing a ballistic missile facility in Al Dawadmi, west of Riyadh, indicating that the ballistic missile facility was similar to the Chinese missile technology.
