Our Sports Panel participates in one last Mock Draft before Thursdays draft.
Herro is a quality guard that gives the Celtics the shooting ability that they have lacked in past years. Herro may not be an everyday starter, but it depends on the Celtics situation in free agency. Him being paired with Rozier and Smart would give the Celtics a quality back court for the next few years. This doesn’t change the trend of the Celtics continuing to draft guards, but Herro is a different one that will make an immediate impact on the team.
Rookie Predictions: 9ppg, 1.5 rpg, 3 apg, 48% fg
With the 13th pick, and a plethora of good options here for Miami, I think the Heat take PJ Washington from Kentucky. Langford is my 1B right now for this pick but Washington won me over with his smooth shot, high motor, and overall aggressive playstyle. He could thrive in the stretch-four slot that Miami could definitely use youth for, and to make matters even more compelling for Miami, he went to Kentucky, much like current center starter Bam Adebayo. While guard play is also an issue, the Heat may be looking to select Ky Bowman with their newly acquired second round pick, who could cover that hole.
Rookie Predictions: 8 PPG, 5 RPG, 1 APG, 40% 3P
Hachimura can score at a high level making him a promising option that could pair nicely with Willy Hernangómez if that is indeed someone the Hornets would like starting at that center position. If Kemba departs this makes for a somewhat safe pick whose major defensive flaws are made up for with the other strong defenders on the roster like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist who could even mentor Rui on the defensive end.
Rookie Predictions: 12 PPG, 5 RPG, 1 APG, 36% 3P
To me Clark is the sixth best player in this draft at the very worst. His stats are off the wall. He has a +50ish net rating which is absolutely absurd. He has around an 11% block percentage for being somewhat undersized. He can control the ball with low turnovers and he can also pull up to the basket with ease. He reminds me somewhat of Bam Adebayo and Pascal Siakam in a way because of that. His fit with Minnesota is unstoppable because his playmaking combined with KAT’s elite scoring ability makes this a great frontcourt for the future that can also compete now, even making a push for the playoffs.
Rookie Predictions: 10 PPG, 8 RPG, 2 APG, 1 BPG, 1 SPG, 70+% TS%
Little’s draft stock was super high after the McDonald’s All-American game, but he struggled in his only season at UNC. Showed flashes of his huge potential but will need to develop more in the NBA. Big risk/reward type player but if developed could be a steal.
Rookie projections: 9 PPG, 3 RPG, 3 APG, 43% fg
After years of turnover at the center position, At 6’11 and skilled, Hayes could be the big man the wizards have been looking for. With Wall out and Beal possibly getting dealt, Hayes can provide the wizards with a nice piece to start their rebuild.
Rookie Predictions: 9 PPG, 4.7 RPG
An athletic two-way guard who helped anchor one of one of the best defenses in recent college basketball history, Jarrett seems to projected as a high end 3 and D player. His offense though is very well rounded, as he is a capable shooter off the dribble and catch.
Rookie Predictions: 12 ppg, 5 rpg, 2 apg, 48% fg
With tremendous potential and a lengthy body, Reddich is exactly what the NBA is becoming. With their young core Reddish will fit right in and make the Bulls a lot better.
Rookie Predictions: 12.1 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 1.3 APG
With great offensive fluency and strong upbeat defensive motor he’s exactly what the Suns need with their current roster, even though I think the Suns will land RFA D’Angelo Russell, Coby White would strive as a great 6th man for years to come.
Rookie Predictions: 6.7 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.9 APG
The Cavaliers are in full re-build mode and with having some of the top odds in the draft, they definitely would like to be higher in the draft. Nonetheless, Hunter is a great prospect for the Cavaliers to take. Combining a scorer in Sexton with a two way guard like Hunter will drastically improve the Cavaliers. Hunter showed just how valuable he was to Virginia when they had an incredible turnaround to win the national title this year, in a game that he was spectacular. I love his game, and the Cavaliers will have a spectacular player that will be able to start and play for years to come. Plus, Hunter will continue to be a Cavalier, since he’s already used to that. What are the chances!
11 ppg 4 rpg 3 apg 40% fg
The 4th overall pick is currently held by the New Orleans Pelicans after a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers that sent star forward Anthony Davis to the Lakers in exchange for the pick. The Pelicans are said to be shopping the pick but with no deal in place we’ll just keep them with the selection. With the 4th overall pick the New Orleans Pelicans select Darius Garland. Garland only played 5 games for Vanderbilt with his season being cut short due to an ACL injury but experts believe his talent is up to par with that of fellow prospect Ja Morant. In limited action Garland averaged 16 ppg on 53 percent shooting from the field. His closest pro comparison has been Portland’s Damian Lillard and with his ability to shoot with range it’s not a bad take at all. While this draft has been looked at by most as a 3 player draft when it’s all said and done Garland may have many saying it was a 4 player draft all along.
13 PPG 3 apg 3rpg 45% fg
Barrett has noted his desire to play for New York for a while now and reports have surfaced that the feeling is mutual. Standing at 6’7 Barrett averaged 22 point per game shooting 45% from the field and 30% from 3 point range. While Barrett isn’t a sniper he’s shown the ability to knock down shots and with the Knicks staff lead by Head coach David Fizdale the improvement is something that should be noticeable in the coming years. Barrett has shown the ability to handle the media well and for the Knicks that’s just one aspect that should make this a good match for both sides.
Rookie Predictions: 15 ppg 5 apg 4rpg 43% fg
After the trade, the Grit and Grind era is officially over and the Grizzlies are in full rebuild mode. What better way to start that off than with an explosive PG? Morant is the prototypical PG needed for the modern NBA and has a chance to be the best player in this whole draft.
Rookie Predictions: 20 ppg, 7 apg, 4 rpg, 46% fg
This is a very easy pick considering zions athleticism and raw talent. He will instantly become the face of the New Orleans franchise and provide Lonzo Ball with an excellent passing target inside. Having a point guard like Ball should help Zion create and give him time to work on his outside shot.
Rookie predictions: 17 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 3.3 apg, 56%fg
