(PM) — A police briefing which is still underway has confirmed that 11 people have died as a result of a shooting at Virginia Beach Municipal Center this afternoon. Sources from the precinct have indicated the number can be as high as 14, though this has not been formally confirmed.
The shooter is also confirmed dead. Police say they opened fire in response to the incident.
At least six other people have been hospitalized due to injuries and are in various conditions.
A police officer was also shot during the incident and the police chief stated that he was only saved by his body armor.
Additionally, unconfirmed reports say that the shooter was a project manager from the municipal utility facility who had been fired from his job yesterday. This has not yet been confirmed.
A further police briefing will be held at 9:30 PM local time.
