I’ve never found myself to be in the position I am right now, so for the sake of the reader, I’ll be as direct as possible because writing while stoned can sometimes be an adventure in of itself.
My name is Mike SP, but in my small social media following, I’m known as Mr.WakenBake. I own two small business ventures, one of which I make upcycled bongs out of alcohol bottles and the other is a clothing company. I received this illustrious moniker from an old coworker who would pick me up for work at 5 AM, where I would enter his car wreaking of what he’d call ‘awesomeness’. What solidified the experience was my love of coffee from all across the country made by small independent coffee roasters.
I was a Communications Major in college and did not really get anything from the classes that I had not learned from traveling as an extreme sports athlete. Therefore, I left school and worked as an Aquatic Coordinator in Newark, NJ.
I got into Cannabis on and off when I was a teenager, mainly from being depressed due to losing my parents at a young age. It wasn’t until I was in my early 20’s, playing action sports and rollerblading in NYC with my cousin, that I met and became friends with a group of rollerbladers. One was Jamaican and we’d skate with these large blades, get broke, scraped and just “out of it”. After, we’d go back to my Jamaican friend’s house, where his brother-in-law would have this fresh and amazing smelling weed.
Try to imagine this in the late 90s and early 2000s. Rappers were talking about having the best east coast weed, but I never understood what they meant. Naively, we always thought it came from either California or Amsterdam. At the time, rumor had it they were getting it from the Legendary “Branson” who was talked about by almost every Tri-State Area Rapper. I don’t know if this was true or not, but who knows. This was the pre-social media era. Everything was private, nothing was posted.
Over the years I would lose family and friends to cancer and researched more about cannabis. I would then begin to develop relationships with weed growers, small business owners, social media influencers, music artists, DJs and people from all walks of life.
As a Writer, I have covered a lot of happenings in the cannabis community. From the reemerging rise of baby boomers seeking alternative means of medication due to their outrageous prices to most recently seeing Oklahoma legalize medical marijuana. I’ve even seen the advent of the drive-thru dispensary.
Have there been highs and lows? Definitely. There were cases of tainted grows making their way into a few shops out in Colorado. This forced some of the first cannabis recalls in history. Additionally, there was the introduction of private event hosting, Mike Tyson throwing his hat into the cannabis business, and the Florida Attorney General calling for a lower THC count. However, as time has gone by, it’s been shown that this first wave of legalization brought about change to how the industry and community are viewed.
Cannabis Legalization has been a growing trend throughout the last 10 years with States like Colorado and Washington leading the movement. More states are now realizing that cannabis is a viable option for reviving crippling debt.
In my opinion, I would call this phase that we’re currently in the developmental phase. We’ll see new forms of the industry develop due to the determination to maintain the business aspects of the industry. With states signing new hemp laws into place, small farms will have some sort of hope the industry will revive their businesses. With these drastic changes, there’s always going to be pushbacks as a result of trying to maintain some sort of “normalcy.”
My goal is to give you the most comprehensive view of cannabis through a new perspective. While writing this, I had other plans in what I wanted to actually post for my first article. That being said, in the news world when one story “falls through the cracks”, instinct always tells you “you gotta go off your gut(that and a blunt)”. It’s that instinct that allowed me to introduce myself to you all a little. I hope you join me on this journey into what I hope to be an amazing ride.
